Frequently Asked Questions About Chinese Currency (RMB)

What is the difference between RMB and CNY?
RMB (Renminbi) is the name of China's currency; CNY is its ISO 4217 currency code — the same way "US Dollar" and "USD" refer to the same money. When you're spending in China, they mean exactly the same thing.
Are credit card exchange rates different from official rates?
Usually yes. Visa, Mastercard and your card issuer typically add a foreign transaction fee of around 1%-3% on top of the reference rate, and the exact rate used is set at the moment your transaction settles, not when you pay. Always check your actual card statement for the final amount charged.
Can I exchange physical cash at Chinese airports?
Yes, but airport currency counters usually charge higher fees and offer worse rates than other options. For most trips it's cheaper to link an international card to WeChat Pay or Alipay for daily spending, and withdraw cash from a bank ATM if you need RMB in hand.
